I have to admit, I wasn't feeling this album the first time I listened to it. But I have since learned the error of my ways, and while I'm still more partial to their earlier albums, this is still a great one.

Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty**

Hip-Hop

One of the best hip-hop albums I've heard in years. Fabulous production, catchy hooks, and good beats for listening or dancing (or working out). Also, we are finally told to shake it like something you're actually supposed to shake!

Hoquiam – Hoquiam*

Singer-Songwriter, Alt-Folk

To be honest, I was disappointed by Damien Jurado's solo album (also released this year). But this album, recorded with his brother, more than makes up for it. Simple vocals and guitar, combined with poignant melodies and lyrics, make this a stripped-down, emotional favorite of the year.

Zola Jesus – Stridulum EP*

This is actually a really hard theme to describe. It's a particular feeling that I get, usually in the late afternoon on sunny days, or driving in the summertime. There's something that makes me crave dreamy, fuzzed-out music - think shoegaze, chillwave, dream pop (although it branches out to other genres as well). The kind of music that belongs to blinding sunlight, and makes me lament missing the late-80s/early-90s heyday of shoegaze. So this is a mix trying to capture that feeling.
